User experience
Create optimal experiences for your customers and increase conversion by following these best practices for web and mobile integrations.
In this section, we offer tips and considerations to create a great and simple experience for your users.
While Yoti provides a privacy-friendly approach to age verification, that does not mean customers will be comfortable having a photo taken of them. There are aspects surrounding this action that raise questions, concerns or even irrational thought, resulting in users subjectively opposing the use of the technology.
These aspects can be averted if the right information is provided at the right times during age verification.
Environmental factors
Emotional responses during age verification differ depending on a user’s surrounding environment and its accompanying factors.
In a public environment, there can be a decrease in user confidence that influences the speed at which someone will choose, or conversely not choose to complete age verification.

Public Devices
In a private environment, users spend more time to read the information provided, resulting in a greater understanding of the service.

Private devices
Age estimation is available in a myriad of environments, on many device types. We highly recommend that you adjust contextual, guidance and reassurance content to best suit your target audience and their environment in which they use Age estimation.
Content examples
We have provided a list of examples for contextual, guidance and reassurance content for many scenarios.

Context
Less context, sets punctuality | More context, time for education |
---|---|
Approval needed for restricted items | How do you want to prove your age? |
Age verification options | Verify you are over 25 using your face |
Age approval needed |
Guidance
We recognise three aspects that can affect the accuracy of an age estimation. That’s why we recommend providing the following before an age estimation, so that a user can ensure a successful scan of their face:

Guidance images
Light of the face should be as evenly lit as possible, so ensuring a user is in a well lit area, helps to reduce the uncertainty of the age estimation.
Only hats that create significant shadow across the face can cause uncertainty values to rise for an age estimation. Most hats that do not cover the face and are not shadow intensive should not have to be removed.
Users wearing glasses have a tendency to believe removing eyewear will improve their age estimation, this is not the case with Age estimation. To save users time, we show this information upfront.
Reassurance
We recognise three aspects that can affect a user’s confidence in using Age estimation technology. We recommend highlighting this content before an age estimation to alleviate these concerns:

Reassurance
Ensure that you are being transparent with regards to what the photo is going to be used for and make sure that it gets permanently deleted from your system once the age estimation has been performed.
Reassure users with the fact that they cannot be identified personally.
Build confidence by letting them know a camera will be used and that they need to enable access to the camera to proceed. Most web browsers will automatically provide an overlay asking the user to allow this access.
Powered by Yoti
Users who choose Age estimation will be shown our persistent ‘Powered by Yoti’ mark. This should remain on-screen for the duration of the age estimation.
Please do not alter or create your own asset. Please contact us with regards to assets though our support form You will need to provide a powered by Yoti logo on your age estimation service.
